DBD - Dancing By Definition
Dancing By Definition is defined as: Where individual calls can be broken into their component parts, so that a call can be danced from any position on the floor, including dancing a call from a different starting position. In other words, Plus DBD is all of the calls you know and love, but often from new or different positions. A "dance by definition" club, is one where the members know how to do the moves from any position, not just gender-specific ones.

Not all clubs or callers support DBD, but those dancers that have learned DBD are usually better dancers for the experience.

The internet is a great source of information with different ways of expressing things. Here are some definitions of DBD found randomly on the net:

Dancing By Definition involves any situation where you have to remember the definition of a call. Often this involves calls from unfamiliar positions or fractionalized calls. or Where individual calls can be broken into their component parts, so that a call can be danced from any position on the floor, including dancing a call from a different starting position. or This requires that dancers remember how each call is defined rather than what usually works. For example, Swing Thru is defined as Half by the Right if you can followed by Half by the Left if you can.

Don't try to make more out of it than it is. The end result is that you will be a better dancer,

APD - All Position Dancing
In many clubs, calls are only called from certain standard positions. For example, the caller keeps the gent on the lady's left most or all of the time. So if you are a man, you will always turn to your right during Square Thru, which means you don't have to think as hard about where to go next. Other calls also have standard positions, and so most people only learn how to do half (or less) of the call. Some people think this makes it easier to learn, though to others of us it means you're only learning a lot of special cases, and you're developing bad habits that will plague you if you ever choose to dance a level higher than Plus. With APD, a couple may have the lady on the gent's left, or may consist of two gents or two ladies; any arrangement of sexes is a legal starting position for a call (except for some sex-linked calls, of course). All Advanced and Challenge dancers are required to know APD, but it is optional at Mainstream and Plus. courtesy www.mixed-up.com

Two other definitions of APD are: All-Position Dancing refers to dancing calls from non-standard positions. For example, if you are in facing couples with the gents on the left, the call "Right and Left Thru" would be Standard-Position Dancing. If you are in sashayed couples (gents on the right), then "Right and Left Thru," with the lady courtesy-turning the gent, would be All-Position Dancing. And, dancing either the belle's or beau's position from standard formations of square dancing calls.
